Email Notification Functionality

Postby s1joshi » Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:18 pm

Hi Jayanta

Recently there was a change carried out to hide the message content on the email notification, i understand the reason behind change has been to drive people to login to website thus in a way encouraging them to post content onto sites rather than doing individual email communications.

However my personal opinion has been that the with this change communication flow has become somewhat restricted, There is a higher probablity for people to miss out on important communication, espacially if this related to meetings and coordinating things.
It would have been best if could arrange for a way to communicate people via emails, considering that posting the thread via email is not feasible, reading posts via email should be allowed to help disseminate information quickly.

I understand that the number of posts and overall traffic may have increased to some extent over past few weeks, but I think, it might be coming from new joiners, we increased almost by count of 100 over past 2 months

I understand there may be difference of opinion among the members, Lets list down all pros and cons and then take a stand accordingly.

Regards
Seema

Hi

I think if the content of the post is not delivered directly to members mailbox then there is a 50 - 50 chance of member seeing it. if you deliver them directly in their mailbox then the chances of their seeing the content of the post is very high.

regards,

Manish

Dear All,

The reason why sending the contents of the post to emails was disabled, was due to the following reasons.

1. To encourage members to visit the forum more often. Usually members read all the replies made on the forum on the emails and never visit the forum. This decreases the chances of members visiting the forum and they are not aware of the other activities going on in the forum.

2. Prevent members from forwarding emails to other websites. We have noticed that members forward emails to other websites for publishing since the entire contents of the post made on the forum is contained on the email.

3. To keep a check mechanism to control the contents of the post made on the forum. If a members writes anything on the forum, it is automatically emailed to all members. Incase there is any objectionable content, we do not get a chance to edit the post since it has already been sent through email. Now, this will allow us to edit the contents on the forum.

Initially this feature was introduced as we were a small community and people often tend to forget about the community forum. If an email is received, people will know that some activities are going on in the forum and will encourage members to visit the forum. However now with the community growing bigger, sending thousands of emails to all members for each and every reply posted on the forum might be challenging from a technical viewpoint, as this is a very server intensive job and our host or mail server might not allow sending thousands of emails. Hence in the future, if we grow to 1000+ members we might have to disable the feature completely.

However as of now, if members feel that this is causing inconvenience, we can always think of a workaround.

Please share your thoughts.

The biggest of all...indian real estate forum also sends email with content in it if you have subscribed to the thread. Also, they send you 3-4 emails and ask you to visit the forum if you want to receive further updates in e-mail. I think this is the best way. IMHO untill a person subscribes to a thread, his/her mail box should not be flooded with all the ongoing threads and discussions.

Jayanta, I agree with you. Most important thing is that not having content on e-mail allows users to go to forum and read posts and participate. Since, whenever you read a post/reply, 5 more related articles are shown and you can explore them, enhance your knowledge and reply on them. I have observed that number of posts, views and replies have definitely increased since the disabling of this feature. Secondly, when you are delivering content directly, you are NOT having any control on content distributed since e-mail sent can't be taken back in any case. Hence, it creates problems for us (moderators) in cases of objectionable/improper content being circulated. Whereas on forum, we can edit content.

We have been receiving feedback of too many emails from the forum.

Please remember that you always have the option of opting out of the daily emails by clicking on the unsubscribe link on the bottom of every email, or email subscribe @myfaridabad.in to remove your email address.

Here are the options listed out again, we have also put a poll on this page to check for members opinion. Please put your vote and decision will be taken accordingly.

1. To unsubscribe from the daily emails which is triggered for every new post, click on the unsubscribe link on the bottom of every email, or email subscribe @myfaridabad.in to remove your email address

2. Receiving emails in the current format for only project related post is not possible. To receive email notifications for your project or any other specific section, you will need to unsubscribe from the daily email and follow the conventional way of subscribing. Guide is given in the above posts.
