Go-ahead for Metro extension

The DMRC plans to extend the Metro line to Faridabad

THE CENTRAL Empowered Committee (CEC) constituted by the Supreme Court on environment has given a goahead for the extension of the Metro rail service to Faridabad. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) plans to extend the Metro line to Faridabad.

An advocate, Vijay Panjwani, had moved the SC expressing fear that the Metro line through Badarpur would adversely affect some archaeological sites and a sports complex.

The CEC found the Metro project in public interest.

CEC members were of the view that the Metro line is 20 m away from Kose Minar (a protected heritage site), a tower raised during the Mughal period to measure distance. The Archaeological Survey of India standards do not permit any construction within 13 m of a protected site. Hence the construction of the Metro line 20 m away from Kose Minar was found to be safe.

The CEC report also says that the Metro line for Badarpur is under progress and is to be completed by September 2010. It does not disturb the existing Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex.

As per a survey conducted by the DMRC, the proposed elevated Metro line from Badarpur border to Ballabgarh has to pass through the central verge of the DelhiMathura Road.

Various industries association have been demanding the extension of the Metro service to Faridabad for quite some time. The demand has been gaining momentum in the last couple of years with the increasing population load on Faridabad and Badarpur continuing to remain a bottleneck.
