NOIDA: Noida and Greater Noida authorities constituted an expert panel on Thursday to implement a joint project for municipal solid waste (MSW) management in the twin cities. The project is being designed with the target of handling approximately 650 metric tonnes of solid waste in the cities on a daily basis.

According to officials, the MSW project will be executed as a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The committee will plan, design and implement the project in Noida and Greater Noida. The authorities have sought the assistance of IIT-Roorkee to handle technical aspects of the project. The panel will be headed by Noida Authority DCEO, Akhilesh Singh.

Apart from collection, handling and segregation of solid waste, the authorities are also planning to generate revenue from by-products derived from the treatment.

The usage of the latest technology to maximize the revenue generated from the project is being considered. Officials said refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and electric energy are the two such by-products. “However, there hardly exists any market for RDF. We are looking at the option of converting municipal waste into energy,” said Samakant Srivastava, PE (Outer), who is in charge of the MSW project.

Waste-to-energy (WTE) technology is being mulled over because of the low footprint of the plant. Around 6-7mw electricity could be generated from the quantity of MSW generated in the two cities, said officials.
