Flat to every slum dweller in Delhi if BJP comes to power: Vijay Goel

Vying to return to power in the national capital after 15 years, Delhi BJP today promised to provide flats to each and every family living in over 600 slum clusters if it wins the assembly polls slated for November.

Addressing a ‘Jhuggi-Jhopri’ convention at Talkotara stadium organised by the party, Delhi BJP chief Vijay Goel said flats will be built on Public Private Partnership model at places where slum dwellers are living at present.

“In the last 15 years, 40 lakh people living in slum clusters have been betrayed by the Delhi Government. If BJP comes to power, then flats will be given to each and every family living in slum clusters,” Goel announced in presence of BJP’s election in-charge for Delhi, Nitin Gadkari.

The Delhi BJP chief also promised to set up dispensaries and police booths in slum clusters besides providing clean water and “cheap” electricity if BJP came to power in Delhi.

“I also promise that you will be given cheap electricity and clean water once BJP come to power. We will also set up dispensary, police booth, proper toilet and school in the area you are living. We will also issue ration cards to eligible people living in the slums,” Goel said.

People from over hundred slum clusters participated in the convention, organised by the party to announce a “development agenda” for the slum dwellers.

Address the gathering, Gadkari praised the development model of Gujarat and said all the promises made by the party for people in Delhi will be fulfilled if BJP regains power in Delhi assembly polls.

“I have asked Vijay Goel not to make false promises and we will fulfil all our promises. People living in jhuggi jhopri will be given houses if we win the polls,” Gadkari said.

Criticising the UPA government for decline in the growth rate, Gadkari said people are fed up with the government due to corruption, high inflation and rising unemployment.

“In Gujarat, the growth rate is 11 per cent but India’s growth rate is 4 to 5 per cent…inflation has made life difficult for the poor, unemployment is increasing,” he said.

Warning people about the “consequences” of Congress’ return to power, he said the party never cared for the poor.

“Since Independence, Congress has been giving slogans to remove poverty. Despite voting for them and bringing them to power again and again, you remained poor because after coming to power, the Congress picks your pockets rather than helping you,” Gadkari said.

He said the amount of money “gobbled by corrupt Congress ministers in 2G scam, Commonwealth Games and Coalgate would have been enough to eradicate poverty in Delhi.”

“When Delhi was ruled by BJP, you may remember the prices of various commodities at that time. If you vote us back to power, those days can return. CM Sheila Dikshit says that she has developed Delhi in last 15 years, but I dont’t think people have really benefited by fruits of the so-called development,” he said.

Goel said slum dwellers will be given electricity supply through a single-point connection.

“While Congress government has been cheating people by showing false dreams, BJP has always delivered what it promised.”

Attacking the Delhi Government for effecting a series of tariff hikes in the last two years, he said the power tariff will be brought down by 30 per cent if BJP comes to power.

Several Delhi BJP leaders, including MLA Subhash Sachdeva, general secretary, Ramesh Bidhuri, South Delhi Municipality Mayor Sarita Chaudhary also spoke on the occasion.
